· 13 min read

Summary

  • Core rule: Eat sargi before sunrise, do not eat after sunrise until you see the moon, and break the fast with water and a sweet after offering arghya to the moon. Karwa Chauth 2026 is on Thursday, 29 October.
  • Not "after 12 noon": The fast is from sunrise to moonrise, not from midday.
  • Strict or gentle: Nirjala means no food and no water. Phalahar means fruit, milk and water are allowed. Both are accepted in different families. Your health decides.
  • If you feel dizzy or unwell: Sip water or switch to fruit and milk. Do the sankalp, puja, katha and moon offering, and your vrat stays alive. Pregnant women, people with Sugar or low blood pressure, and the elderly should follow a gentler version and ask their doctor.
  • Mantras: Ganesh, Gauri, Shiva and the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra are the most common. The words are in Part 4.
  • Who can fast: Married women, engaged or unmarried girls, and husbands too.
  • An additional puja: Devpunya's Maa Baglamukhi Puja on 29 October gives you a way to seek the Goddess's blessings even if you are too tired to do more than the basics. See the puja.

Part 1: The Rules

Q1. What are the basic rules of the Karwa Chauth vrat?

  1. Sargi before sunrise. Eat and drink well in the pre-dawn hours.
  2. Sankalp. Take a vow to keep the fast (the words are in our complete guide).
  3. No food from sunrise to moonrise. In the strict version, no water either.
  4. Evening puja with Ganesh, Gauri-Shiva and Karwa Mata, and the katha.
  5. Arghya to the moon after moonrise.
  6. Break the fast with water and a sweet, usually given by your husband.
Know when your fast starts

Check your sunrise time before you plan

The fast begins at sunrise, which changes by city. See your sunrise, tithi and the day's best muhurat on the Devpunya Panchang.

Q2. From when exactly does the fast start? From sunrise or 12 noon?

From sunrise. After you finish sargi before sunrise, you do not eat again until the moon is seen. The idea that "you can eat until 12" is a misunderstanding. If you are unable to follow a full day, see Part 3 for gentler versions.

Q3. Is a Karwa Chauth fast nirjala (without water)?

The traditional fast is nirjala in North Indian families, but it is not a rule of the scriptures. Many families allow water, and many women with health issues keep a phalahar fast. Both are considered valid. A fast you can safely finish is better than one that makes you ill.

Fasting is your part. The long puja can be your pandit's. Maa Baglamukhi Puja, 29 October 2026, in your name and gotra.

Q4. What are the do's of Karwa Chauth?

  • Do wake up early and eat a good sargi.
  • Do drink plenty of water before sunrise.
  • Do wear clean clothes and, in the evening, dress up in shringar.
  • Do listen to or read the katha.
  • Do pray calmly and chant mantras.
  • Do rest in the afternoon.
  • Do wait for the right moonrise time for your city (here is the table).
  • Do touch the feet of elders and take blessings.

Q5. What are the don'ts of Karwa Chauth?

  • Don't skip sargi if your health needs it.
  • Don't eat or drink (in the strict version) between sunrise and moonrise.
  • Don't break the fast before the moon, or before its listed time.
  • Don't argue or lose your temper. Peace of mind is part of the vrat.
  • Don't force anyone to fast, including yourself.
  • Don't break the fast with onion, garlic, meat or alcohol. Start with something light and sattvic.

Q6. Are there rules about sleeping, sewing, cutting and similar things?

Some families avoid sleeping in the day, using a knife or scissors, sewing or knitting, or waking a sleeping person. These are family customs, not rules of the scriptures, and they vary. If your family follows them, you may keep to them. If not, it is not a sin to differ. The main rule is a calm mind and an honest fast.

Q7. Can I wash my hair or take a bath during the fast?

Yes. A bath in the morning and again before the evening puja is encouraged. Some families avoid washing hair after the puja begins. Follow your family's custom.

Busy day, but want to pray with intent? Explore online pujas with a video of the full ritual.

Q8. Can I work, go to the office or cook during the fast?

Yes. Most women do. Take care of your energy: avoid working in the heat, take short breaks, and keep the afternoon light if you can. Avoid cooking heavy meals when you are hungry and tired.

Part 2: Sargi and the Break-Fast Meal

Plan your sargi on time

Finish sargi before sunrise in your city

Open the panchang, pick your location and see exactly when the sun rises, so you know when your sargi window ends.

Q9. What should I eat for sargi so I don't feel weak?

Aim for slow-release energy and hydration:

  • Complex carbohydrates: paratha, oats, sevaiyan, poha or dalia.
  • Protein and fat: curd, paneer, nuts (soaked almonds), milk.
  • Fruit and water: banana, papaya, watermelon or other watery fruit, coconut water.
  • Sweet: a small piece of the traditional mithai or a dry-fruit laddoo.

Drink water gradually over the last 20 to 30 minutes before sunrise.

Q10. What should I avoid in sargi?

  • Fried, heavy and salty food, which makes you thirsty.
  • Too much tea and coffee, which dehydrate.
  • Very sugary drinks on an empty stomach, which can lead to a crash.

Q11. What is the best way to break the fast?

First water, then a sweet or a date, then a light sattvic meal. Do not start with a heavy, oily or spicy meal after a long fast. After 10 to 15 minutes, eat a normal dinner with roti, dal, vegetables and curd.

Fasting is also a day of devotion and reflection. If you would like to add one more offering, you can book a puja at a temple in your name, and receive the video. This Karwa Chauth, it is the Maa Baglamukhi Puja.

Part 3: If You Feel Dizzy or Cannot Keep the Full Fast

Q12. What should I do if I feel dizzy or faint during the fast?

Sit or lie down immediately in a cool place. Do not push through it. If the dizziness does not pass in a few minutes, break the fast with water and a little to eat. If you faint, feel chest pain or breathlessness, or are not recovering, seek medical help. The vrat is for your family's well-being, and your own health is part of that.

Q13. What is the minimum I can do that does not break my vrat?

Here is a ladder from the most traditional to the gentlest. Choose the highest step that is safe for you:

Level What it means
1. Nirjala No food, no water until moonrise
2. Water allowed Sip water to avoid weakness. Most elders accept this
3. Phalahar Fruit, coconut water, milk, juice and dry fruits. Considered a valid vrat for the sick, the pregnant and the elderly
4. One small meal A single light meal after the evening puja or at noon, with the sankalp, puja and arghya all kept
5. Prayer-only vrat No fast. You do the sankalp, evening puja, katha and moon offering, and donate food or clothes

Many pandits say that the heart of the vrat is the sankalp, the puja and the devotion, and that a gentler fast is acceptable when health requires it. If you want a ruling for your own family tradition, ask your family pandit.

Q14. Can I drink water and still say I kept the Karwa Chauth vrat?

In the strictest sense, a nirjala vrat means no water, and water does break that version. However, for centuries elders have allowed water and phalahar for those who are unwell or weak. If your health requires it, take the water, keep the sankalp and finish the puja. Intention and sincerity matter most in a vrat.

Q15. I am diabetic. Can I fast?

Please ask your doctor first. Fasting can cause blood sugar to drop dangerously, especially if you take insulin or tablets. Doctors usually suggest a phalahar vrat with small, regular amounts of fruit, nuts, buttermilk and water, and checking your blood sugar. Do not skip your medicines without advice.

Pregnant, unwell or fasting lightly? You do not need to do any physical ritual for the Maa Baglamukhi Puja. A pandit performs it for you.

Q16. I am pregnant or breastfeeding. What should I do?

Most doctors advise against long fasts without food and water during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Hindu tradition also allows pregnant women, the sick and the elderly to keep a gentle fast. A good option is a phalahar vrat, or just the puja, katha and arghya. Take the sankalp, pray and keep yourself well.

Q17. I have low blood pressure or acidity. Any tips?

Eat a good sargi, drink plenty of fluids at that time, avoid heat and long stretches on your feet, and rest in the afternoon. If you feel unwell, drink water or coconut water. People with acidity should avoid spicy food in sargi and break the fast with milk or a banana before the main meal.

Q18. Can an elderly woman keep a lighter version?

Yes. Elderly women can keep phalahar, a prayer-only vrat, or only listen to the katha. Younger family members should help, for instance by doing the physical parts of the puja.

Part 4: Mantras for Karwa Chauth

Q19. Which mantra should I chant first thing in the morning?

On waking, look at your palms and say:

कराग्रे वसते लक्ष्मीः करमध्ये सरस्वती। करमूले तु गोविन्दः प्रभाते करदर्शनम्॥

Then pray briefly with "ॐ गं गणपतये नमः" and "ॐ नमः शिवाय". After sargi, take your sankalp.

Q20. Which mantra should I chant for my husband's long life?

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is the most widely chanted:

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्। उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात्॥

Chant it 11, 21 or 108 times. If you are weak, 11 times with faith is perfectly fine.

Q21. Which mantra is chanted for Gauri and Parvati?

ॐ नमः शिवायै शर्वाण्यै सौभाग्यं सन्ततिं शुभाम्। प्रयच्छ भक्तियुक्तानां नारीणां हरवल्लभे॥

This is a traditional prayer to Gauri for a happy, fortunate married life.

Q22. Which mantra do I say when offering water to the moon?

  • ॐ सोमाय नमः।
  • ॐ चन्द्राय नमः।
  • Or the longer Chandra mantra: ॐ श्रां श्रीं श्रौं सः चन्द्रमसे नमः।

Pour water slowly from the karwa while saying the mantra, and pray for the happiness of your family.

Q23. Do I need to pronounce the mantras perfectly?

No. A heartfelt, slightly imperfect chant is better than a nervous perfect one. If you cannot say the Sanskrit, you can chant "Om Namah Shivaya" or pray in your own words.

Q24. How many times should I chant the mantras?

Eleven, twenty-one or a hundred and eight times, as per your strength. A mala (rosary) of 108 beads is traditional. If you are fasting and weak, choose the smaller number, and chant slowly.

Part 5: Special Situations

Q25. Can unmarried girls, engaged girls and men keep the vrat?

Yes. Engaged and unmarried girls fast for a good life partner or for their fiancé, and many husbands fast with their wives. A few communities have different rules for when unmarried girls end the fast (some use the stars), so ask an elder. Our complete guide has more detail.

Q26. Does the husband's fast increase the wife's life?

Tradition says that a sincere prayer for a loved one brings blessings, whoever offers it. There is no scriptural formula or measurable result. Treat the husband's fast as a gesture of love and partnership.

Q27. What if my husband is away or abroad?

You can keep the vrat as usual and break it on a video call. Offer arghya to the moon yourself, look at your husband on the screen, and take his blessings. Someone in the family can give you the water and sweet if you wish.

Q28. What if I accidentally ate or drank something?

If you did it by mistake, say a short prayer, ask for forgiveness and continue the fast. If you broke the fast knowingly because you felt very ill, pray in the evening, complete the puja and katha, and give some food or money in charity. Many pandits say the vrat can be completed in this way.

Use the listed time for your city and, if needed, wait 20 to 30 minutes. Then offer arghya facing the moon's direction, or look at it on a clear photo or live stream, and break the fast. See our moonrise table.

Q30. Which pujas can I add to my Karwa Chauth for extra blessings?

Beyond your regular puja, you can book a puja at a temple or offer a chadhava in your name. This Karwa Chauth, Devpunya has the Maa Baglamukhi Puja. And at any time of the year you can explore more online pujas and chadhavas:
