Part 1: The Date and the Tithi
Q1. What is the date of Karwa Chauth in 2026?
Thursday, 29 October 2026. Karwa Chauth is observed on the Chaturthi tithi of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the month of Kartik (Purnimanta calendar). It usually falls about nine to eleven days before Diwali. In 2026, Diwali is on 8 November.
Q2. What are the exact tithi timings?
According to Drik Panchang-based listings:
| Item | Time (29 October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Chaturthi tithi begins | About 1:06 AM |
| Chaturthi tithi ends | About 10:09 PM |
A few websites quote 1:08 AM and 10:11 PM, a difference of two minutes. This comes from rounding between panchang calculation methods and is not important for the vrat.
Q3. Why do some websites say 28 October?
A small number of sites list 28 October. The vrat is decided by whether Chaturthi is present at moonrise, since the moon is what ends the fast. On the evening of 28 October the tithi is still Tritiya (third lunar day). Chaturthi starts only after midnight, at about 1:06 AM on 29 October, and it is still on when the moon rises that evening. So 29 October is the correct date.
Know your date and time? Now plan your prayers. The Maa Baglamukhi Puja takes place on 29 October 2026.
Q4. Does the tithi need to be present all day?
For Karwa Chauth, what matters is that Chaturthi is present at moonrise (the Chandrodaya Vyapini Chaturthi). In 2026 the tithi spans sunrise to moonrise, so there is no confusion.
Q5. Is Karwa Chauth the same as Sankashti Chaturthi?
In many years the two coincide, because both are Krishna Paksha Chaturthi days, and the moonrise is what ends the fast in both. In 2026, Karwa Chauth is on a Thursday. Families who also keep Sankashti Chaturthi for Lord Ganesh combine the two prayers, so keep a Ganesh puja at the beginning of your evening rituals.

Q6. What is the complete timeline for Karwa Chauth day?
These times are for Delhi. Adjust for your city using Part 3.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| Before sunrise (Brahma Muhurta) | Wake up, bath, sargi, sankalp |
| About 6:31 AM | Sunrise: the fast (upavasa) begins |
| Daytime | Fast, rest, light prayers, preparation |
| About 4:30 to 5:30 PM | Get ready: shringar and thali |
| 5:38 PM to 6:56 PM | Karwa Chauth puja muhurat: Ganesh-Gauri puja, Karwa Mata puja, katha, thali pheri |
| About 8:17 PM | Moonrise: arghya, sieve, husband's blessing, break the fast |
| 10:09 PM | Chaturthi tithi ends (after the fast is over) |
Q7. What is the sargi time?
There is no single "sargi muhurat" fixed by the panchang. Sargi should be eaten before sunrise, ideally in the last part of the night (Brahma Muhurta). In Delhi, sunrise is at about 6:31 AM, so most families finish sargi between about 4:30 and 6:00 AM. Check your local sunrise time and finish eating before it.

Q8. When does the fast officially begin?
The fast begins at sunrise, which is about 6:31 AM in Delhi. Some families treat the start as the end of sargi. Both views are fine. Follow your family's custom.
Q9. Do I have to stop eating at 12 noon, or at sunrise?
Neither of the two is the rule. After sargi, you do not eat from sunrise until moonrise in the evening. It is a whole day's fast, not a "from noon" fast. Read the rules in our complete Karwa Chauth guide.
Q10. When is the best time for Karwa Chauth puja?
The puja muhurat is the auspicious window just after sunset and before moonrise. In Delhi it is about 5:38 PM to 6:56 PM. If you miss it for any reason, do not worry: do the puja as close to this time as you can, and certainly before moonrise.

Part 3: Moonrise Time in Your City
Q11. What is the moonrise time in major cities?
Moonrise changes with your location, and published figures differ by a few minutes between sources. These are approximate times for 29 October 2026:
| City | Puja muhurat (approx.) | Moonrise (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| New Delhi | 5:38 PM to 6:56 PM | 8:17 PM (sources range 8:12 to 8:20) |
| Jaipur | 5:46 PM to 7:03 PM | 8:28 PM (8:22 to 8:30) |
| Lucknow | 5:26 PM to 6:42 PM | 8:06 PM (7:58 to 8:06) |
| Kolkata | not listed | 7:47 PM (7:38 to 7:47) |
| Mumbai | not listed | 8:52 PM (8:50 to 9:00) |
| Bengaluru | not listed | 8:42 to 8:51 PM |
Gaps in the table mean we did not find a reliable puja window for that city. In those cities, use the evening hour after sunset and before moonrise.
Please treat these as guides, not as fixed times. Check a local panchang on the day.
Q12. Why is moonrise different in every city?
The moon rises on the eastern horizon, so cities in the east see it earlier than cities in the west. That is why Kolkata gets it before 8 PM while Mumbai and Bengaluru get it close to 9 PM. Latitude and the local horizon also change it by a few minutes.
Q13. How do I find the exact moonrise time for my city?
- Search "moonrise [your city] 29 October 2026" on a reliable panchang website such as Drik Panchang.
- Check a calendar or panchang app.
- Ask your local temple or pandit.
If you live in a smaller town, use the time of the nearest big city and add a few minutes if you are further west, or subtract if you are further east.

Q14. I live abroad (USA, UK, Canada, UAE, Australia). When do I break the fast?
You follow the local moonrise at your location, on the local day on which Chaturthi is present at moonrise (which is usually the same date or one day off). Find your city's moonrise for that evening and use it. Because the date can differ, check a diaspora panchang or a local temple's announcement.
Q15. What if the sky is cloudy and I cannot see the moon?
Wait for the listed moonrise time. Many families wait another 20 to 30 minutes, then offer arghya facing the direction of the moon and break the fast. You may also use a live moon video or a clear photo. If you feel unwell, do not wait: break the fast with water. Your health comes first.
Q16. How long after moonrise should I wait before breaking the fast?
You can break the fast as soon as you have seen the moon and offered arghya. There is no need to wait for the moon to climb. Some families wait 5 to 10 minutes so that the moon is clearly visible above the horizon. Do not break the fast before the listed moonrise.
Part 4: Making the Most of the Muhurat
Want to make a temple offering too? Offer a chadhava in your name.
Q17. What should I prepare before the puja muhurat begins?
Have everything ready by about 5 PM so that you are calm when the muhurat starts:
- Dressed in shringar
- Puja thali and karwa filled with water
- Clean space with the images or idols
- Katha book
- A glass of water and a sweet for later
- A sieve and a lamp
Q18. What is the order of the evening puja?
Ganesh puja, then Gauri-Shiva puja, then Karwa Mata puja, then katha, thali pheri, aarti, blessings, and finally moonrise and arghya. The full step-by-step process is in our complete guide. The story behind the vrat is in the Karwa Chauth katha.
Q19. Is Thursday special for Karwa Chauth 2026?
Thursday is dedicated to Guru (Brihaspati) and Lord Vishnu, and yellow is the colour of the day. Maa Baglamukhi, also called Pitambara Devi, is worshipped in yellow, so many devotees consider Thursday a favourable day for her puja. This is a matter of devotion, not a rule of the Karwa Chauth vrat.
Karwa Chauth on a Thursday: a good day to seek Maa Baglamukhi's blessings. Devpunya's puja is held on 29 October at Maa Baglamukhi Dham near Ujjain. Book from home, get the full video and prasad at your doorstep.
Q20. Is there a particular time for the Maa Baglamukhi puja on Karwa Chauth?
The Maa Baglamukhi Puja on Devpunya is conducted by our pandits at Maa Baglamukhi Dham on 29 October 2026. You do not have to be present, so you can focus on your own vrat and the evening puja at home. The sankalp is taken in your name and gotra, and the recorded video reaches you within about 48 to 72 hours. You can see the details on the puja page.
Q21. What if I miss the puja muhurat?
Do not panic. Do the puja as soon as you can, before moonrise. The muhurat is the best time, but the vrat's strength comes from your faith. Take the sankalp, light the diya, read the katha and offer arghya.
Q22. What are the things not to do during the muhurat?
- Do not start the puja in a rush or while distracted by a phone.
- Do not break the fast before moonrise.
- Do not eat food or drink water before the arghya (if you are keeping nirjala).
- Do not skip the Ganesh prayer at the beginning.
