All five are performed on Saturday, 10 October 2026 — Sarv Pitru Amavasya, the closing and most important day of Pitru Paksha. It is the one day that covers every ancestor of your line, including those whose death tithi nobody remembers.
Because the ground was given for it. The asura Gayasura won a boon that anyone who saw or touched him attained moksha — which emptied the hells and broke the moral order. Vishnu pinned him beneath a stone with his foot. Gayasura's last request was that this ground become the supreme place for ancestral rites forever.
When Rama, Sita and Lakshmana came to Gaya for Dasharatha's shradh, Rama went to gather materials. Dasharatha's spirit appeared and demanded the offering at once. Sita made the pinda from river sand and offered it. When Rama doubted her, only the Akshayavat tree told the truth — so Sita cursed the Falgu to run dry at Gaya. It still flows mostly beneath its sandy bed.
Dharmaranya means "the forest of Dharma." It is one of the named tirthas inside Gaya Kshetra, recorded in the Vayu Purana, where Dharma himself is said to have performed a yajna. A sacred tank in Varanasi, originally called Vimala Tirtha — "immaculate water." It is described in the Skanda Purana's Kashi Khanda, and tradition holds it existed before the Ganga came to earth. Its presiding deity is Kapardishwara Mahadev.
A sage was meditating by the tank when a pishacha — a tormented spirit — appeared. It had once been a Brahmin, and had fallen into that state because it lived at a holy place and sinned there. It begged for release. The sage told it to bathe in the kund and worship Kapardishwara. It did, and was freed. The tirtha was renamed Pisach Mochan — "liberation of the pishacha."
