2 observances on this date
Ganesh Chaturthiगणेश चतुर्थी
Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha Chaturthi
Also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, Ganeshotsav, Vinayagar Chaturthi, Vinayaka Chavithi, Chauti and Ganesh Jayanti.
The birth of Ganesha, remover of obstacles and the deity invoked before every other beginning. Clay murtis are installed at home and in public pandals, worshipped for anything from a day and a half to ten days, and then immersed in water -- the visarjan that returns the form to the formless. It opens the Bhadrapada festival season and is the largest public festival in Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka.
What devotees do
- Install a clay Ganesha murti after a ritual bath, facing east or north.
- Offer twenty-one durva blades, twenty-one modaks and red hibiscus; recite the Ganapati Atharvashirsha.
- Perform the main puja during Madhyahna, the midday period in which Ganesha is said to have been born.
- Avoid looking at the moon tonight -- the Mithya Dosha, or false-accusation, belief attached to this Chaturthi.
- Immerse the murti on the chosen day with aarti and the distribution of prasad.
Hartalika Teejहरतालिका तीज
Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha Tritiya
Also known as Hartalika Vrat, Gauri Tritiya and Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya.
The waterless fast kept by married women for their husbands and by unmarried women for a good one, commemorating Parvati's austerity to win Shiva. Its name recalls the friends who "abducted" (harat) her into the forest so she would not be married against her will.
What devotees do
- A nirjala fast -- no food and no water, kept overnight.
- Worship clay images of Shiva, Parvati and Ganesha at pratahkal.
- Keep vigil with bhajan through the night; break the fast the next morning.
The tithis are compressed this year. Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya runs 13 Sep 07:08 to 14 Sep 07:07, so it prevails at sunrise only on 14 Sep -- and only for about an hour, which puts Hartalika Teej on the SAME DAY as Ganesh Chaturthi. Several almanacs will place it on 13 Sep instead, on the grounds that the tithi covers almost all of that day. Follow your family or temple tradition.
Shubh Muhurat (शुभ मुहूर्त)
Abhijit is the eighth of the fifteen muhurtas between sunrise and sunset, so it is 49 minutes long today rather than a fixed 48 — it stretches and shrinks with the length of the day.
Ashubh Kaal (अशुभ काल)
We do not publish Varjyam, Dur Muhurat or Godhuli Muhurat. The rules behind them are known, but the underlying tables differ between sources by enough to move a window by the better part of an hour — and these are windows whose whole purpose is telling you not to begin something. We would rather leave them out than print a number we cannot stand behind.
Choghadiya (चौघड़िया)
The day and the night are each divided into eight parts. Amrit, Shubh and Labh are auspicious; Char is neutral; Udveg, Kaal and Rog are best avoided. It is the quickest check there is for whether the next hour and a half is a good time to begin something.
Day — sunrise 6:05 AM to sunset 6:27 PM
Night — sunset 6:27 PM to sunrise 6:06 AM
The night choghadiya belongs to Somvaar, not to the next day: in the panchang the weekday changes at sunrise, not at midnight.
Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana (नक्षत्र)
The Moon is in Chitra at sunrise, in its 3rd pada. A karana is half a tithi, which is why there are more of them in a day than anything else here.
Sun and Moon (सूर्य और चंद्र)
Day length is 12 hours 22 minutes, night 11 hours 39 minutes.
Hora (होरा)
Twenty-four planetary hours from sunrise, in the Chaldean order. The first is always ruled by the lord of the weekday — Moon (Chandra) today, which is what makes it Somvaar. Day horas and night horas are not sixty minutes each; they are a twelfth of the actual day and a twelfth of the actual night.
Rashi, Masa and Samvat (मास)
The two masa reckonings differ through every waning fortnight, which is why a calendar from Delhi and one from Chennai can name the same day differently. Today it is Bhadrapada in the north and Bhadrapada in the south — the same, as they always are in a waxing fortnight.
