Part 1: Who Is Maa Baglamukhi?

Q1. Who is Maa Baglamukhi?

Maa Baglamukhi is the eighth of the ten Mahavidyas, the ten great wisdom forms of the Divine Mother. She is shown wearing yellow, seated on a golden throne, and she holds the tongue of a demon in her hand. This image is symbolic: it shows her power to "stop" harmful speech, harmful intentions and harmful forces. She is also called Pitambara Devi (the one dressed in yellow).

Q2. What does the name "Baglamukhi" mean?

The name is said to come from valga (a bridle or rein), meaning the one who holds back or controls. Her power is called stambhan: the ability to stop, still and bring under control whatever is working against us, whether it is a hostile force, a legal trouble, a rumour or an inner restlessness.

Q3. What is the story of Maa Baglamukhi's origin?

According to the traditional story, a terrible storm once threatened to destroy the world. Lord Vishnu did tapasya (penance) at Haridra Sarovar, and the Goddess appeared there from the yellow waters as Baglamukhi and calmed the storm.

Another story tells of a demon named Madan, who had a boon that whatever he said would come true. He misused it. The Goddess stopped his speech and held his tongue, ending his power. It is why she is called the goddess who stills harmful speech.

These are traditional tellings and details differ between texts.

Q4. Why is Maa Baglamukhi worshipped in yellow?

Yellow is her colour. Devotees wear yellow clothes, offer yellow flowers and turmeric, and prepare yellow sweets such as besan laddoo. The colour is associated with Guru (Brihaspati), with knowledge, and with calm strength. This is why Thursday is considered a good day for her worship.

Q5. Where are the famous Maa Baglamukhi temples?

Maa Baglamukhi is worshipped across India. Some well-known Baglamukhi temples are in Madhya Pradesh (Nalkheda in the Agar Malwa region, and Datia) and Himachal Pradesh (Kangra). Devpunya's puja is held at Maa Baglamukhi Dham near Ujjain.

Part 2: The Puja and Its Benefits

  • Removal of obstacles in work, family and life
  • Protection from negative energies
  • Strength to face challenges such as disputes, competition and legal matters

Q7. What are the benefits of doing the Maa Baglamukhi puja on Karwa Chauth, specifically?

There are three reasons devotees choose this day:

  1. Karwa Chauth is a day of prayer. The whole household is in a devotional mood, and many families like to add one more offering to the day.
  2. It falls on a Thursday in 2026. Thursday is linked with Guru and the colour yellow, which are close to Maa Baglamukhi's worship.
  3. It is a day of praying for the family's well-being. Many women who fast for their husband's long life also like to pray for the family's protection and peace, and Maa Baglamukhi is worshipped as a protector.

To be clear again: this is an additional puja, not a part of the traditional Karwa Chauth vidhi. Read how the Karwa Chauth vrat itself is done in our complete guide.

Q8. What is a Mirchi Havan?

A havan is a sacred fire ritual in which offerings are made into the fire while mantras are chanted. In a Mirchi Havan dried red chillies are offered into the fire as part of the Baglamukhi ritual. Devotees believe the fiery offering burns away negativity and obstacles and calls on the Goddess's protective power. The ritual is performed only by trained pandits, so you do not have to handle chillies or smoke at home.

Q9. What is a "Sarva Karya Siddhi Mahayagya"?

Sarva Karya Siddhi means "success in all undertakings." A Mahayagya is a large, extended yajna with many offerings and mantras. The name signals that the puja is performed for success and for the removal of obstacles in all of life's undertakings.

Q10. Is the puja meant to harm enemies?

No. Baglamukhi worship is often described in terms of "victory over enemies," but the right way to understand it is as protection from hostile forces, from negativity and from unfair situations, not as a way to harm another person. We do not support any prayer meant to hurt anyone. Pray for protection, clarity and justice, and for the removal of your own obstacles.

Q11. Can I perform Baglamukhi mantra jaap at home?

A simple prayer such as "ॐ बगलामुखी देव्यै नमः" with devotion is fine. The strong beej mantras and tantric-style sadhana of Maa Baglamukhi are traditionally taken from a guru, with proper discipline and rules, and should not be tried casually from the internet. This is one of the reasons many devotees prefer to have a trained pandit perform the puja for them.
